Occasionally Things Fail

The plasma cutting table went down again this morning and it’s been a mad rush trying to troubleshoot the problems. When the main production machine goes down, the shop goes down.

I used to panic when these things happened. I would get angry, irrational and feel like the weight of the world was on my shoulders.

I’ve learned things will work themselves out and the main task is to calm your nerves. I take a lot of deep breaths now and try to focus on what is in front of me.

Honestly, it’s extremely hard for me to do. I find myself thinking about things that have no relation to the issue I’m dealing with.

The clock seems to speed up when things get crazy. The heart rate increases. The panic makes you feel like everything is lost. The irrational thinking echoes that there isn’t enough time and things are never going to work out.

Occasionally things fail. There is always enough time if you can find a way to calm your heart rate, take a step back and deal with what is in front of you. Don’t let the enormity of the situation lead you to a state of irrational behavior.

All of this is easier said than done. I work to improve this mindset each day.

When I have been able to calm and focus, I feel like the clock slows and I can find a groove that works the problem out, rather than making everything worse.

Take a breath, count to 10 and refocus.

All will be well.
